- E1L01 - Hollywood Holocaust
-
- * When the explosions calm down, go and shoot the fan once. Then jump
- into the ventilation shaft.
- * As soon as you land, turn to your right and kill the alien - your first
- one!
- * Next to the box where he jumped you from, there is a medkit. But that's
- not all. Jump onto that box. See the wall ledge over the window?
- Run-jump onto it. Then turn towards the ledge under the big ad.
- Run-jump there. As you walk towards the ad, a platform will elevate,
- carrying a RPG! Keep its ammo only for the special cases I'll tell you
- below.
- * Jump back down and go to the cinema ticket booth. See that crack in it?
- Align yourself well from outside, activate the crosshair ("i") and
- target that crack. Backup a little and launch a rocket with the RPG.
- That will blow up a hole and you'll be entering the cinema.
- Note: There is also a back entrance to the cinema, which you can easily
- find by exploring the alley.
- * Enter the cinema from the front. Clean each area methodically. When you
- reach the bar, jump behind it. There are many things here:
- - medkits visible.
- - a cash machine that, when operated, opens a secret passage above and
- to your right (you'll need the jetpack to go there, wait for now).
- - a door with a shotgun behind it.
- - an area with a Fire Extinguisher and an Atomic Health. (this area
- becomes accessible when you walk into the room with the shotgun above).
- Note: Try shooting one of these Extinguishers from far. Sometimes
- blowing them reveals goodies, but it's rare. It's good to know though!
- * Locate the passage closer to the bar (it has no door). Go there, it's
- the bathroom. Kill any aliens that attack you.
- * In the bathroom: After killing the enemies, if your health is below
- 100, you can increase it by... going to the toilet! Just try it.
- Note: That will work once per level (in some levels twice). But if you
- need more health revive, kick or blow a toilet, a urinal or a water
- fountain, to create a little water spring. By clicking and holding the
- action button on it, you can replenish a lot of your health. Slow, but
- sure!
- * At the back of the bathroom look for the ventilation panel. Jump there,
- get the medkit, kick open the panel and enter.
- * All the way through, kick the next panel and kill the monsters. See
- that obstacle looking like a lowered elevator? Click on it and it will
- open. This will bring you to the machine room.
- * The machine room: Kill the badies and get the key. Activate the movie
- machine by clicking that switch next to the window. If you please, you
- can now type "dn1984" and the Apple/1984 commercial will play in the
- cinema! Be aware though that this may slow down the gameplay.
- * Target the low left corner of the screen and launch an RPG rocket. A
- hole will open in the screen. Jump down (crouch/jump to fit in the
- window) and get in that screen hole. Kill the bad guys and get the
- goodies, that include a jetpack!
- Note: At this step, I must note that having the jetpack, you can finish
- the level without using the key! There are more interesting situations
- like that in further levels.
- Big-time advice: Keep that jetpack like a pot of gold; use it only when
- it can make a real difference in your game. Like that secret area you
- opened when you operated the bar cash machine: It would otherwise be
- completely unaccessible, if you didn't have the jetpack. So get the
- armor from that area now.
- * To access your first Atomic Button (that nuclear symbol that when
- clicked ends the level), there are 2 ways:
- - The easy way (jetpack needed): Go from the outside, in the backyard,
- where the cinema backdoor is. Look up. See that bridge? Use the jetpack
- to fly onto it. Run to the Atomic Button, kick or shoot to shatter the
- protecting glass and hit the button.
- - The hard way (key needed): In one of the corners of the bar is an
- elevator (marked "Arcade"). Take it up to the Video Games room. Blow
- those barrels (cover yourself), then try the Video Game "Duke Nukem".
- It opens a secret compartment with a Holoduke in it. Then, operate the
- key on the Access Panel. Move ahead. Dead end? Not really. Walk
- carefully towards the box. Be ready to move back as soon as the
- explosions start. Kill the pigcops (crouch and use the shotgun, 2 shots
- each). Advance, cross that bridge, break the glass and hit the Atomic
- Button.

- E1L02 - Red Light District
-
- * In the porno magazine store the button combination is:
- pushed - up - pushed
- * In the small room outside the building requiring the yellow key, the
- button combination is: up - pushed - pushed - up
- * The blue key is inside a low closet in the bar
- * In the dancing bar with the semi-nude dancers there is an entry to an
- air shaft; you must get in there, but save as soon as you're in,
- because the way out will be hard

- E1L03 - Death Row
-
- * The Blue key: Go to the room with the two rotors. Jump on the right one
- (run-jump), then let turn around to jump to the second, let it twist
- and turn to the room up. Save as soon as you're there, because there
- are monstrers around the corner. The key is in a closet there. After
- you get the key, you don't need to jump back to the rotors; just align
- yourself towards the room where you came from and run to it.
- * The Yellow key: It's easy to find the room where it is. TOO easy...
- It's a trap. You have enough time though to make a run get the key and
- even the ammo behind it and get out; but as soon as you run out, run
- away; there will be one pigcop on each side of the exit waiting for
- you.
- * The Red key: With the yellow key you open the door to the outside.
- Don't stay there and get killed; Once outside, just run to the foremost
- left corner to get the red key, then return inside.
- * The Cell Block force fields: With the red key open one of the red
- access 2 doors (any will do). A pigcop is inside each. Get up in the
- central room with the demon head hologram. Throw one of the switches in
- the room. The walls around will turn and reveal a red door. It is not
- the red door that is important! At exactly the opposite side of the
- room there is now access to 2 new rooms. In each there is a pigcop and
- a switch. These 2 switches disactivate the 2 Cell Blocks' force fields.
- * The cells: Go to Cell Block 02 and throw the switch with the 4
- positions until the most far door is open. Go there and kill the
- monsters. There is a poster of a girl on the wall. Get IN it!
- * The cave: Use pipebombs to blow two parts of the cave (look for the
- cracks on the cave walls), one after the other. Continue until you get
- to the pool
- * Oxygen tank: You'll need to get that oxygen tank, so after you kill the
- monsters, go around and get all there is to get, most importantly the
- oxygen tank!
- * Entering the submarine: Get in the water (use the "crouch" and "jump"
- buttons to move vertically) and go down. The entrance to the submarine
- is from directly under it! There are a couple of monsters there; kill
- them and save just before going to the next mission. It's going to have
- a tough start...

- E1L04 - Toxic Dump
-
- * Just as you start, dive and find the 3 buttons underwater; press the
- top and the bottom buttons but let alone the middle one
- * Turn around and get out through the door that opened. Get out of the
- water, get on the land and go around to find the blue key (easy)
- * With the blue key you enter the facility. Get in and go to the big
- processing room. After you kill your enemies there, look up till you
- find up high a laser trap. It will be on your way later, so blast it
- with the RPG from below
- * Look where the barrels are picked up by the metallic hand; pretend
- you're a barrel, stand at the right spot and let the hand transport you
- * Follow the barrels route and let a second metallic hand pick you up to
- transport you across. The laser bomb trap that you blew up from below
- would have killed you here!
- * Follow the root until you see a room on your right; break the glass,
- get in and kill the enemy; get the red key!
- * If you want you can continue up and get some stuff inside two tubes;
- else get down to the main room where you came from and use the red key
- * This will reveal a gun that will shrink you; You need to be shrunk and
- you need to be fast! As soon as you get shrunk, get in the right hole
- on the floor and keep following the wall on your RIGHT! This will get
- you in another room. Wait till you expand again, kill the enemy and
- throw the switch.
- * Now get shrunk again (there's another gun in this room) and run again
- to the hole, this time keep following the wall to your LEFT!
- * Good, you've made it halfway though the level now! Save before
- continuing...
- * In front of you a door has opened; enter it and get in the water. Get
- out of the underwater window (fight when necessary), avoid or blow the
- underwater mines (those thorny spheres attached to chains) and find
- another underwater window like the one you came from. get in it
- * Turn around looking outside. At the bottom right corner of the window
- there is a switch. Throw it. This raises the water level.
- * Get out of the water and onto the land. Get to the higher spot and
- run-jump across. Kill the enemies and get to the place with the monitor
- and the 2 switches.
- * The switch under the number "02" is the one you need; pull it. If you
- look in the monitor, you'll see that this opens an underwater door.
- Forget about the other switch, it is not necessary (lowers back down
- the water)
- * Get in the water, get in the door that opened and blow the monsters
- with the RPG. Get in the underwater window and turn around. There are 2
- switches in the room: the one that you absolutely need to pull is again
- the one at the bottom right corner of the window.
- * This opens a new door in front of you and also releases more monsters
- that you can blow away with the RPG again (else try the shotgun)
- * Passing through the rotors: Save first! There is way to pass through
- them; get in front of them and in the middle and prepare to run in
- between them when the GREY PARTS passe! That's because the grey parts
- are flat and let a space in between them
- * When you pass, kill the enemies fast, get up, kill the aliens and get
- on land. Time to save, 2/3 of this wild mission are done...
- * Get in the water flow going downways, you'll fall into a big pool of
- water. Lots of big mosnters there, use the RPG and the shotgun to
- eliminate them ALL.
- * Get out of the water and go to a (quite visible) control room. There is
- a button there, push it. This opens a new room that you can see from
- the window where you are. More monsters come out, kill them.
- * The new place has a button. But no point going there, it's a point you
- must activate from far (by shooting). Run up the water stream next to
- it and jump onto a ledge on your right. Walk to its edge and onto that
- metal platform. Save.
- * Turn towards the button and switch to the pistol or the shotgun. It may
- take a few tries before you get to hit the button.
- * This makes the two platforms (the one you stand on and one across the
- water pool) come and meet each other fast. You have just a fraction of
- a second to walk onto the other platform as they meet. This will bring
- you across to the other side. Save.
- * Go around, kill the monster and get in the room. Save here. Press
- escape, save as special-1 and press escape again to go back to the
- game. Why? See below...
- * You may not realize it but this is a very important point in the whole
- game! From here you can actually continue to mission 5 (The Abyss)
- where you'll meet the first boss OR go to the secret level (Launch
- Facility)! After completeing the secret level, you'll go to level 5
- anyway.
- * Here's how to go to each:
- o To continue to level 5: A good tactic is to make a wild run along
- all this tunnel, without spoiling your ammo all the way to other
- end where the level end button is. This level is history; prepare
- for the next one!
- o To go to the secret level: When you reach the rapid stream further
- down, there is one wall on your left that is more enlightened than
- the others. Try to blow it from far before reaching it with a
- rocket and get into it. You'll see that the nuclear button there
- is green instead of red. You may need to try a few times to
- succeed in this, it is rather hard with the fast stream and the
- many monsters.

- E1L05 - The Abyss
-
- * Get out, go to the right, open the door and get the boots
- * Go down, find the canyon, move next to your left wall and you'll find
- the blue key
- * Go back to the beginning, open the blue access door, kill the pigcops
- and enter (many medkits and a pigcop are in the shadows in there)
- * Go along the path until you find a gap. Turn to your left and run/jump
- across to a cave. Keep to your right wall till you get across from the
- other side of the above gap. Run/jump across
- * Move onto the St Andreas Fault and a big earthquake will be triggered.
- Stay there till it ends.
- * From here you have to go down far below; Locate the closest ledge with
- an atomic health and jump there. Take the atomic health and jump to the
- next closest ledge with an atomic health. Jump again from ledge to
- ledge to gradually reach the bottom. Kill the monsters and replenish
- your health
- * Enter the cave. At the top it seems like there are many ways to go.
- Save here, move onto the opening and kill all monsters that attack you.
- * Look around you; you'll see:
- o Stairs going down (where you came from)
- o Next to it stairs going up (that's where you need to go, but not
- yet!)
- o A third direction. Go there.
- * Don't jump down anywhere; just explore the place. You're looking for
- the following things:
- o boots
- o a tomb with a hand (hand=switch) that opens a door to a medkit
- o A waterfall; it's a secret passage, behind it there is ammo and a
- fountain (clicking on a fountain replenishes your health,
- remember?)
- * Now go and take those stairs up we talked about
- * You'll get to a ceremonial chamber. Take the atomic health and jump
- down. Activate both switches; one will reveal an RPG, the other a
- secret corridor. Save
- * Take the corridor all the way, jump down and kill the monsters
- * Now you're in a room with 3 switches and 1 mousehole...
- * Click on the switch you can reach; it will raise stairs to the second
- switch
- * Go up the stairs and look out of the window; a new earthquake will be
- triggered, revealing a disactivated shrinking gun.
- * Go up to the 2nd switch and save. You may have to try many times to get
- the next step right
- * Click the switch, then run as fast as you can and try to jump on an
- elevator that goes up to the 3rd switch!
- * Once you're in front of the 3rd switch save. Click on it and a
- shrinking ray will hit you and make you little. Jump down and go
- through the mousehole. your work here is done!
- * This will bring you back outside, next to that waterfall we saw earlier
- * Go out to the red area. Jump onto the lava and run across. Don't stay
- to fight there, just cross the lava, get on land and find a good spot
- to fight. Kill all the monsters that attack you.
- * From now on save that RPG ammo for the boss; use the shotgun instead
- * Keep going; the only difficult part for a while will be a fragmented
- bridge. Save befor e trying it. Activate crosshair pressing "I". You'll
- need this to align well yourself from rock to rock. Just keep trying to
- jump from rock to rock saving often.
- * Keep going till you find a big round hole on the floor. Jump in and
- save as long as you land
- * Go around the area you fell in and get all the ammo you can, but don't
- go through the door yet!
- * Fighting the Boss:
- o First Strategy
- Switch to RPG, go through that door and approach the medkit in the
- middle without reaching it yet. Save. Going further up will
- trigger the arrival of the episode 1 boss! Locate him and fire all
- rockets that you can, until he stops coming towards you. Run
- around to avoid his fire and as he passes to the your half of the
- room, pass to his and get the 2 atomic healths! If you're not too
- damaged and he's not pounding you save. Keep being on the other
- half of the room than the one he is. CROUCH up to the middle and
- fire rockets at him. At a certain point, if you're lucky, he,ll
- keep to the other half of the room long enough for you to kill
- him.
- o Second Strategy
- Actually, there is an easier strategy. The doorto the boss,
- doesn't have to close! The triggers to the boss arrival and the
- door close are individual. All you have to do is approach
- carefully the medkit and look at the floor around it from
- different angles. You may notice a thin strip on the floor
- beginning a little before the medkit and ending just at the end of
- the corridor leading to the circular area. Go back and run/jump
- this strip (or fly over it with the jetpack). This way the door
- will remain open but the boss will come. Now blast him as he
- appears with the RPG, if you get the chanc get the atomic healths
- and then run jump again over the strip and get out the door. The
- boss will follow, but when he reaches the door he'll be blocked
- and won't be able to cross it (too low for him). Moreover the
- explosives he'll be throwing will be hiting the door and won't
- pass. You can blast him off with ease... BTW this boss needs about
- 25 direct RPG hits to die. If you run out of RPG ammo, use the
- shotgun and the pipebombs.
- * Congratulations! End of Episode 1!

- E1L06 - Launch Facility (Secret level)
-
- * Kill the enemies, then take the corridor on your right and move ahead
- until you find your way blocked by a force field. In that area you will
- find a pair of boots. Take them then go back to the beginning (you,ll
- meet some more monsters).
- * See that rotor in the water? Jump in and go behind it, you will find a
- switch there; press it. It will stop the force field.
- * Go and cross the door that was blocked before. A little further up
- there is an Octabrain. Kill it, or dive into the water to get a shotgun
- there. While you're underwater look around you, you,ll see something
- looking like aretractable wall. Remember this for a little later.
- * Move ahead, be careful, there are a couple of auto-guns pounding you.
- The trick is to keep moving. Get the medkits and take the corridor that
- goes upwards (there is no other choice)
- * At the top of the corridor there are 4 buttons. The combination is
- pressed-up-pressed-pressed
- * Get in the door that enters and kill the monsters. There are 2 things
- to do here:
- o Get the blue key
- o Press the switch in the room
- * Remember that underwater blocked wall? You can go now (optional) to
- find 2 atomic healths and shotgun ammo.
- * That last button you clicked a bit above stoped the force field of door
- "01". Go there and kill the monsters; Get the ammo, the atomic health
- if you can and jump in to finish the rest of the monsters.
- * Take the corridor going upwards; you'll find an RPG, then you'll fight
- a couple of bad guys and finally you'll get to a room with ammo, a
- medkit and the access panel for the blue key. Look out to see what
- happens when you use the blue key.
- * Go back down the corridor and take the other way. It will seem that
- there are many ways to go; here's what to do. Don't go to the force
- field door, that just leads back to where you came from. Take the other
- way. You'll get in a big area with a small door and a big door. Save.
- * Kill the pigcop guarding the big door, open the small door, kill all
- the pigcops in there (carefull there), get the red key and press the
- switch to open the big door. Save.
- * Get out and kill all resistance, use 1-2 pipebombs ato get the pigcops
- in that low area. That area will become very important later, but for
- the time is useless
- * Go to the left as you facing the rocket and take the elevator up. Take
- the teleporter to inside the rocket, use the red key and ake the
- teleporter back.
- * Next to the teleporter there is a jetpack. Take that! You don't need it
- here, but when you reach the last level of the episode 1, "The Abyss"
- (E1M5) it can make your life MUCH easier, This jetpack may not seem
- much to you, but this is your recompense for passing through this
- level! Just look at "The Abyss" and you'll see what I mean. Very well
- planned by the game designers; it is details like this that distinguish
- a good game from a great one...
- * Take the elevator down. Go into that low room we talked before and hit
- the switch (it has just appeared). The rocket will be launched against
- the aliens! Very impressive. The choice of the room down there was to
- make sure that what you see looks good. If you'd be outside you'd be
- seing the game limitations; smart move!
- * In this area there was a red door, previously blocked. It's open now.
- Take the elevator down, kill all the monsters and throw a switch to
- open a door in that area. Save.
- * There is an area reminding of the end of mission 4 ("Toxic Dump").
- Indeed, you can run all the way to the end without fighting. Save (see
- below) and then hit the switch!
- * Where will you go from here? Normally to "The Abyss". But it did happen
- to me ONCE to go to the super-secret, super-hard level, "Faces of
- Death"! I have no idea why that happened or if it was meant to happen
- at all, but I've never been able to repeat it...

- E1L07 - Faces of Death (Super-secret level)

- * "Faces of Death" is considered as E1L07
- * There is no exit from it (no way to end the level)
- * You can't access it normally through game-play (I did once however!)
- * It is not meant to play for the story (since there is no exit), but it
- is fun to play
- * The way to play it is to press and hold "COMMAND" while you launch the
- Duke Nukem application You'll get the choice to which level you want to
- go, choose Episode 1, Level 7.
- * There seems to be also an E1L08, but it is just a room, and nothing to
- do.
